Know the birds and choose your objectiveFahamu kuku na uchague lengo lako
Indigenous local chickens (Kienyeji) are Kenya's traditional birds; Kenbro, Sasso and other selected or commercial chickens are commonly called Improved Kienyeji. Jasalex sells Kenbro and Sasso. Choose a strain, flock size and meat, egg or dual-purpose objective that fit your land, budget and market.
- Kenbro and Sasso are Improved Kienyeji sold by Jasalex Poultry Farm; Jasalex has found both efficient under our local conditions.
- They grow much faster than indigenous local chicken (Kienyeji). Sasso grows at a rate similar to Kenbro, much faster than Kienyeji and only slightly below a broiler under good management.
- A small rural household can keep 2–20 birds on well-managed full free range, while larger flocks fit semi-free-range or semi-intensive systems with enough space, feed, water and secure housing.
Choose the system and prepare the houseChagua mfumo na uandae banda
Free-range, semi-intensive and intensive systems can all work, but each has different feed, labour, land, disease and predator risks. Prepare a clean, dry, secure house before chicks arrive.
- Match the system to flock size, land, labour, neighbours, predators, weather, feed supply and market. Do not release chicks to range before at least 4 weeks.
- Clean first, allow the house and equipment to dry, then disinfect at the product-label rate.
- Use dry screened litter, enough feeder and drinker space, safe upper ventilation and no direct draft at bird level.
Receive chicks and manage broodingPokea vifaranga na usimamie brooding
Correct heat, ventilation, balanced feed, clean water and daily observation determine chick survival. Use a thermometer and chick behaviour, never store a large flock overnight in boxes, and investigate coccidiosis or respiratory signs early.
- Pre-heat the brooder and provide the correct chick-level temperature; chilling or overheating can cause piling, dehydration and high mortality.
- Provide complete chick mash and clean water immediately and make sure every chick can reach both.
- Check chicks at least morning and evening for distribution, feed and water use, droppings, weakness and breathing signs.
Feed correctly from chick to meat or eggsLisha vizuri kutoka kifaranga hadi nyama au mayai
Choose one complete programme for the objective. In the standard path, use chick mash in Weeks 1–7 and begin the gradual change to growers mash at the start of Week 8. Separate meat and future-layer charts run to Week 20; use supplements and range only within measured limits.
- Choose a standard chick-mash path, a starter-crumb fast-start path, a compatible four-week starter programme or a professionally balanced farmer programme.
- For the standard path, start the chick-to-grower transition at the beginning of Week 8 and complete it over 5-7 days.
- Meat birds never receive layer mash; plan the main sale check at Week 12 and hold longer only when the extra margin justifies it.
Manage water, feeders and litter every daySimamia maji, feeders na maranda kila siku
Clean water is a nutrient and an early-warning measurement. Keep drinkers working, feeders accessible and litter dry; sudden changes in water or feed intake often appear before visible production loss.
- Provide safe, palatable water continuously and clean drinkers whenever dirty.
- Raise equipment as birds grow, but keep it reachable by the smallest healthy birds.
- Repair leaks and remove wet litter; do not merely cover a wet patch with dry material.
Use vaccination correctly and protect immunityTumia chanjo vizuri na ulinde immunity
Vaccines prevent selected diseases; they do not cure a sick flock and they cannot replace biosecurity, balanced feed, clean water or good brooding. Start with the Day 1 hatchery record and have the final programme confirmed for local risk.
- Day 1 may include Marek's and Newcastle plus Infectious Bronchitis; verify what was actually given on the hatchery card.
- Coryza and Fowl Cholera vaccines are risk-based, not automatic for every farm.
- Keep vaccines cold, protected from sunlight and used by the exact label route.
Learn the cause, spread, main symptoms, prevention and treatment principle for each important condition. Pictures show warning patterns, not a confirmed diagnosis; isolate, record and seek help early.
- Coccidiosis often affects young birds and is strongly encouraged by wet contaminated litter.
- Infectious Coryza commonly causes facial or eye swelling, nasal discharge and sneezing, but other respiratory diseases can look similar.
- Newcastle, Gumboro, Fowl Pox, Marek's, Fowl Typhoid, Fowl Cholera, Infectious Bronchitis and CRD also need early recognition.
Apply biosecurity and welfare every dayTekeleza biosecurity na welfare kila siku
Biosecurity reduces the chance that infection enters, spreads within or leaves the farm. Welfare means birds have suitable feed, water, comfort, air, space, health care and protection from fear, injury and avoidable pain.
- Work from youngest and healthiest birds toward older or suspect birds.
- Use farm-only footwear, clean hands and dedicated tools for each house where practical.
- Quarantine new or returning birds and avoid mixing ages.
Manage for meat, eggs or dual purposeSimamia kwa nyama, mayai au matumizi mawili
Separate meat and future-layer pathways early. The meat flock stays on grower feed and has a recommended main sale check around Week 12; future layers grow steadily on grower feed and change to layer mash only when laying begins.
- Weigh a representative sample every week and record average plus uniformity.
- Use the separate 20-week meat and future-layer charts in the feeding lesson.
- Prepare the meat market before Week 12; hold longer only when the extra margin exceeds added feed and risk.
Keep records, calculate costs and price correctlyWeka rekodi, hesabu gharama na panga bei vizuri
Profit is measured after feed, mortality, labour, heat, transport and unsold stock—not by sales cash alone. Calculate the cost of each saleable bird, kilogram, tray or dozen and add a planned margin using clear delivery and payment terms.
- Record opening birds, deaths, culls, feed, water, weights, vaccines, treatments, withdrawal dates, eggs, sales and costs.
- Divide total relevant cost by saleable output—not chicks placed or all eggs laid.
- State whether the price is per bird, live kilogram, dressed kilogram, tray or dozen and whether delivery is included.
